The match began to tighten with the last six balls remaining. Alex Hales looked to put the game away as he swung for a boundary only to be caught and played by Tom Helm.

Hero of the match, Alex Hales (58 on 41 balls)

Alex Hales said: “The pitch was slow and I didn’t have much shot to start. It took me a little while to find my rhythm but I finally got there.

“It’s naturally a fast-scoring pitch with a fast outfield, with small boundaries, you’re always in the game with the chase.

“[The atmosphere] was unbelievable. It gets better every time I play here and the crowd last year was fantastic and it’s great to see all the smiling faces.”

what they said

Rockets captain Lewis Gregory said: “A really good start to the competition. I think we played really well up front.

“Everywhere that [Alex Hales] goes, he hits them and he scores and wins cricket games. We knew it was going to get a little trickier as the game progressed and the ball got a little softer. He played fantastic up front and saw the guys go home.

“Whatever the format and color of the ball placed in front [Joe Root], he scores points. The pace he played was exactly what we needed today and saw the game at home for us.

“It’s a great competition, it’s great to see full houses everywhere we’ve been and the fans here have been great and may it continue for a long time. We’ve kind of found a formula where we can win games of cricket and having these guys supporting week in and week out is pretty special.”
