PHUKET: Crowds gathered on the streets of Phuket Town last night (October 14) as the Phuket Vegetarian Festival entered its final night of rituals for this year’s nine-day festival with ceremonies to remember the nine gods emperors in heaven.
The main gatherings of spectators were at the intersection of Clocktower Circle and Standard Chartered Bank, where devotees from each Chinese shrine participating in the festival alighted their motorcades and completed the last part of the journey to Saphan Hin on foot.
The first shrine to visit Saphan Hin Point was Bang Neow Shrine, with worshipers leaving the temple at 10:30 p.m.
As tradition dictates, as the faithful left the shrine, all the lights in the shrine went out and the doors were closed behind them.
Then come at 23:09 the devotees of the Jui Tui Tao Bokeng shrine. In the heart of Phuket Town.
As the worshipers passed, a flame of firecrackers ignited, filling the streets with smoke. Some took the opportunity to shoot fireworks to mark the occasion.
The festival will end at sunset today, with participating shrines lowering their Go Teng poles with traditional ceremonies starting at 5 p.m.
Next year, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival will be held from September 24 to October 3, 2022.
