Weekly number of COVID-19 cases on North Island soars from 1 to 32

Port Hardy Kwa’lilas Hotel Suspends Operations, Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw First Nation Lockdown

Northern Vancouver Island officially has 32 cases of COVID-19.

The health region skyrocketed from a single coronavirus case in the week of October 24-30 to 32 cases October 31-November 31. 6.

On Tuesday, November 9, the Kwa’lilas Hotel in Port Hardy announced that due to recent exposure to COVID-19 among its staff, the company would suspend all tourism and hotel activities for two days.

“Nothing is more valuable to us than the health and safety of our guests and our staff,” the hotel wrote on its Facebook page. “We have been extremely careful, taken the appropriate measures and chosen the safest route.”

Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw First Nation, adjacent to Port Hardy, remains under preventive lockdown with no set end date, after estimating there were a higher number of positive COVID-19 exposures in the community that the nation first achieved.
